Introduction of Taklung Monastery

The Most Glorious Taklung Thangpa Tashi Pal was a reputed Buddhist Master with a huge number of disciples and followers in various parts of Tibet, India and China. One of the most influential and brilliant disciples was Repa Sangay Nyima or Namtsho Dopa Choeji who stayed seven years in Namtso Semodo, a small village under Namtso Town of Dhamshong District which is located in the northwest of the Capital city of Lhasa, Tibet. He has attained exceptionally high level of realization because of which he was invited by the Dakinis through the path of their miraculous silk rope and thread. He became renowned as the spiritual and divine master Namtso Dhopa Choeje, presently known as the 15th Taklung Rinpoche.

This great Master meditated in the holy place called Tsari Mt. in Tibet. Finally, he passed away with a number of miraculous signs in Bangrim.

His next reincarnation was well known as Taklung Dhongi Ural. He went to Dege Chidrog, recently known as Jomda in Chamdo region of Tibet and founded the famous Taklung Monastery known as Thubten Shedup Ling towards the end of thirteen centuries. This monastery was primarily established for the welfare of his devotees in order to accumulate merits, virtue and spiritual happiness.

From the time of this spiritual Master to the present fifteenth reincarnation of Taklung Rinpoch, his followers are blessed and honored with the continuous reincarnation of their spiritual and divine Master without any hindrance. Thus, his teachings of Dharma, meditation and compassion deeds have been constantly upheld.

Karma Gonpo Tulku was the religious leader of Vogmin Karma Monastery, the middle seat of His Holiness the Karmapa. A series of reincarnations continued till the present eighth reincarnations Thupten Jampa Rinpoche.

In a nutshell, there are two Rinpoche (reincarnates) and about three hundred monks. Currently, there are two meditation institutions newly founded solely for the maintenance of traditional lineage of great spiritual masters including the six tenets of Naropa’s path of profundity. There is also one institution for learning Tantric and Sutra studies of Buddhism. Thus, the three wheels of Dharma are still being performed.

Taklung nunnery monastery in Tibet

Taklung Nyingkhu Pema Ling Nunnery Monastery is located to the west of Dechen Wobar Rocky Mountain, 10 kilometres from Taklung Monastery. It is a very holy place of Avalokoteshvara, the lord of compassion. It is as holy as Tsari Mountain which was blessed by various spiritual masters like Guru Padma Sambhava.

There are more than one hundred nuns. Most of them stay to retreat for five to twenty years and meditate mainly on eight-fold practice of fasting, recitation of the billion Mani Mantras, recitation of the billion Vajra Guru Mantra etc.

In this nunnery, the traditional ritual practice is similar to that of Taklung Thubten Shedup Ling. In the olden days, there was no temple and the nuns practice ritual performance and meditation in hermitage. However, with grace of 15th Taklung Rinpoche, one monastery and a hostel for the nuns were built to facilitate better ritual practices. Today, the nuns are being trained in various forms of ritual practices.
